Music Video Job Roles

Camera Operator
The Camera Operator has many tasks and must be able to Multi-task to successfully complete their job. These's tasks are to know how to operate camera's, get equipment and camera prepared pre-hand so everything is ready for shooting. The Camera Operator must also work closely with the Director as the Director discusses the shots and shot types before hand, so the Camera Operator must know where the director would like the shots. 
The main skills to be a Camera Operator are:
  • Able to carry out instructions and pay detail to this
  • Good I.T Skills
  • Good communication
  • Work long hours
  • Knowledge of the principles of the craft of camera work
  • Knowledge of certain electronics



Skills-
Ability to calculate shots and speed of camera movement

Camera Assistant
Camera Assistant mainly deals with the maintenance and operation of the camera. Some of their duties and tasks are collecting hired camera equipment from a company, make sure the camera battery is charged, ensure that the correct stock of film is used, delivering messages to production office. The skills required to be a Camera assistant are:
  • Ability to take direction
  • Able to work under pressure in short amount of time
  • Work quickly in stressful situations
  • Good communication
  • Good I.T Skills
  • Team working Skills




Skills-
Mathmatical mind to work out focus settings on camera's and other technical calculations
Has good I.T skills and basic knowledge
Knowledge of electronics (Camera Electronics)

Art Director
Art Disrector is in charge and responsible for the Assistant Director, the Art Department, the Art Department Assistants, Graphic Designers, Storyboard Artists, Model-makers and all Construction personnel. The Art Director and team covers the creative side of a music video. Within this they can be responsible for the budget of the department.
The skill required to become a Art Director are:

  • Technical, detailed, free hand drawing skills
  • Good sense of time and place
  • Creative ideas
  • Ability to think visually
  • Team leader

Make up & Hair Artist
Make up artists and hair artists work on mainly people who star on TV or in a film, adding great detail to make the person/character stand out and look good. Make up artists have many responsibilities which are making sure people on set have the correct amount of make up on, between breaks they must add more make up to make sure that the people have the same look, work in a certain amount of time depending if its for a film or TV program/show. Hair artists also have many responsibilities such as working in short amount of time and create the hair style required.
The skills required to become a Make up & Hair artist are:

Lighting Director-
Lighting Director is the highest role in television lighting departments. The lighting director has a script reading discussing the style they require. The lighting director has meetings with the Director and most likely the head of departments from the
 Production Designer, Costume Designer, Make up Designer, Sound Supervisor and Camera Supervisor. The lighting director also over-see's the the set up of the lights.

The skills to become a Lighting Director are:
  • Ability to plan ahead
  • Physical and mental stamina
  • Ability to work long hours
  • Good colour vision 
  • Understand Health and safety procedures and legislation's
  • Problem solving

Gaffer
The Gaffer works in the pre-production side controlling the lighting equipment and order the required lighting equipment. The type of equipment they order are such as lamps, generators, cables etc. During production, the Gaffer supervises all aspects of the lighting department's work.

  • Knowledge of Electrical theory and practical

Executive ProducerExecutive Producers are responsible for the overall quality control of productions, and for ensuring that final products conform to commissioners' specifications. They are part of the team who are responsible for selecting marketable projects and ensuring that every step is taken to guarantee success in the market.

Production ManagerThe Production Manager's job is to prepare production schedules or script breakdowns to confirm that the right time has been allocated for all aspects of the production process. The Production Manager as the main person in the Production Department, must communicate with all the other head of departments to make sure that the productions run smoothly, meet deadlines, and stay within budgets. They also monitor schedules and budgets throughout the shoots, pre-pairing daily report sheets for the Producers, detailing all aspects of each day's shoot.

Location Manager
The Location Manager arranges the visits and sets up the location of were they will film. Thier job is to research different locations, and arrange reconnaissance visits to assess their suitability. Then they check with relevant authorities to confirm if the location is available and to ascertain the need for any relevant permissions and licences.

Director
The Director controls everything during the production stage such as controlling the camera floor, communicating with the floor manager and other head of departments. The Director must know the entire production process to successfully complete their job. Directors work closely with Producers and the writers discussing original ideas into finished programmes. They make careful preparations in order to ensure the success of each shoot.  Directors must have a clear creative vision of the project, and what materials are required to achieve it.

Conclusion
The Role I think I am most suited to is the Artist Director. The reason why I think I would suit this job role is because I have technical, detailed, free hand drawing skills, I can think visually on the spot, and brainstorm and create idea's. I also believe I can lead a team/group in this category.
