Styles and Conventions of Music Video's

Narrative-
Narritive is the storyline of something, a brief summary of what e.g. music video is about. A narrative can be short or long

What you expect to see in a Rap/Hip-Hop music video is:

  • Singers dressed wealthy with big fury coats
  • Loads of jewelery such as rings and chains
  • Sometimes money being shown to show off and show what they have
  • Girls in their bikini's and dancing around the Singer/in the background
  • Shot at their house, at the pool

An example of a Video which shows the representation of a Rap/Hip-Hop artist:

This is a good example as it shows some of the facts above such as women dancing in the background, the singer is wearing chains and many watches. Girls are being shown throughout the video which connotes he likes girls and possibly girls like him, he is a stud. Also he is wealthy from the chains and watches he has, he shows us by wearing multiple pieces of jewelery.

The Second type of Rap/Hip-Hop music video is:

Narrative of the Music Video-
The narritive of this music video is a fan who sends fan letters to Eminem 'artist of this song' and Eminem is not returning any letters back to him. Stan (Eminems fan) is violent to his wife and spends most of his time in his basement writing letters to Eminem. Throughout the video he has had enough and is driving in heavy rain speaking into a tape recorder, he loses control of the car and falls of a bridge. Eminem recieves his letter and realises

Why the institution have a narrative-
The institution have a narrative to match the song, to give it a meaning and a story. Also they make the music video unique so people remember the video and possibly remind them of the song. Another reason why institutions make music video's and the main reason is to make more money out of the song. Also to win an award for the best music video but this is not the main aim of a music video.

Styles/Conventions-
Interpretative-
Interpretative is a type of video which explains every lyric and matches the lyrics. For example if a song had 'In the deep sea bed' then it would show possibly a hole through the earth to show 'deep', the sea to show the sea and a bed to show a bed. This is an interesting way of showing a song as you can almost tell the story by just watching the video and not listening to the song. The link below shows stop animation and each part matching the lyrics
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9brbd8XqV94

Impressionist-
An impressionist video is a video which matches the mood of the song and the pace of the song. This makes the song more catchy and more memorable, and also makes the song have a meaning if everything matches together. It also makes the video more entertaining, and more interesting to watch as the speed of the song matches the tempo of the video. In this video it makes us feel the same way he does, sympathetic for the other people he shows in his video. We feel sad for the people in the video and towards the end they they make us feel happy for the people as they have a good ending.

Surrealism/Abstract-
Surrealism/Absract video's can be quite unusual and artistic. Most Surrealism video's are non sequitur and don't make any sense and not relating to the song. An example of a Surrealism/Abstract video is 'Rubber' by Aphex Twin and Chris Cunningham. In this video it shows a man with a huge head (possibly representing an alien) sitting in a wheel chair and moving to the music in almost a exorcist way. I think the video is crazy and has no meaning to it, but because it was different and unusal it will stick to my head.

Animation-
Animation is one of the hardest type of video's to create and longest, but it is the most effective and most artistic type of video. Animation is created using objects and moving the object, each time this is done you take a photo so it runs like a film. This is one of the hardest as this takes precision and patience to create a perfect stop motion and digital animation. The example I have chosen is 'Butterfly' by Corin Hardy, here in the video it shows a homeless man naked in the streets looking for shelter. The impact this type of video has on the audience is, it makes it more interesting to watch as it is creative and colourful, it is also mixed with a drummer.

Intertextuality-
Intertextuality is media and video copyed or similar to the original footage. This has been done in many films and most TV programmes such as Simpson and South Park. The impact this has on the audience is it reminds the of the original video, which they may want to see again. The example of I have chosen is from South Park 'The Lord of The Rings Episode'. From the title of the episode you can tell it is copying The Lord of The Rings. In this episode they represent a DVD to be the 'Ring' and the four main characters

Parody-
A Parody is a mick-take of the original video or a comic version. A parody version is more exaggerated and over the top than the original. The example I have chosen is Chris Brown 'Deuces' spoof. Below I have shown both videos, othe original and the parody. In the parody, they are copying the moves, acting silly and changing the lryics. The impact this has on the audience is it is funny and humerous, more funny for the people that have seen the original video.

Music Video Outlets

Mainstream TV
Mainsream TV is useful to the audience as it is free for the audience to watch. An example of a Mainstream TV channel would be Channel 4 'Freshly Squeezed' here they talk about music and music videos and show one video each day. They also have a big audience who are interested in to different genres of music. The negative side of showing music videos on Mainstream TV is the video can only be played once and it's hard to replay unless you can record/fast forward or rewind. The audience particually might not like the music or music video being shown and there are not many Mainstream TV programs.

Music Channels
Music Channels are very useful to the audience and show a variety of music genres and music videos. These are useful to the audience as there are different programs for different genres so the audience can watch and listen to the type of music they want. An example of Music channels are MTV, KISS, VIVA and MTV Base. Another good reason for music channels is the music videos are shown when the music video is released. Also puts the artist in a music category so its easier for the audience to find the artist.
The negative side of having music channels is top chart songs are over-played and gets annoying. This is bad for the audience as they won't watch the music channel as much they would and also bad for the company as they have less viewers. For some people who may like a particualr song and can't rewind/fast forward or rewind, they replay the music video and only view it once. The last reason is some people can't afford the channel or may not have it, meaning less audience.

Direct CD/Specail Edition CD/DVD Releases
CD's and DVD's are useful to the audience as they have extra bonus features which we haven't seen before. With extra features and bonuses you get more than you payed for and you can only see this by getting the CD/DVD. Also you can replay the CD/DVD as many times as you want as a CD player or DVD player can be replayed also you can rewind the CD/DVD quicker than e.g. the internet as internet may buffer and you can select the speed of the rewind or fast forward. Another positive reason of CD/DVD is you can play in a high quality and is much sharper than other devices.
The disadvantages of getting a CD/DVD is it costs and you have to pay for it. Most people now download but this is illegal. The CD/DVD might only have one song the audience likes or it is a single which only has one song. Also you have to wait for the release dates where on the internet it is leaked and can be downloaded before the release date.

Streaming Websites
Streaming websites are good and useful as you can easily replay or fast-forward the video you are watching. An example of a streaming website would be YouTube. With TV you can't forward as it is being played but with 'YouTube' you can forward to any specific point without waiting for that part. It's very easy to share to others and friends by using the link, or social networking sites which you can share within a click. It is very fast and easy to share, also you can comment about the video's. Another positive side is you can find unknown artists which are not shown on music channels. This is useful to people who can't find their artist or if their artist is not shown on TV channels.
The disadvantage of streaming sites is sometimes it is legal and sometime illegal as you can easily download other peoples video's and upload them yourself or simply keep it for yourself. Another thing is artists don't make as much money as people download or just view the video instead of buying a CD/DVD. Easy for the audience as they don't have to pay for something that is free to them. Another disadvantage to the audience is Ad's popping up during the video which can be annoying and ruins the video.

Artists Websites
Artists Websites are good for the artist as they can sell other products e.g. T-shirts, posters, key rings etc. This is good for the artist as they make more money and fans will buy them. Also artists update events and other stuff showing fans and the audience what they get up to. An example of Artists who have a website is Tinie Tempah, Rihanna, Wiz Khalifa etc. On the website you can see the artist and read more about them.
The disadvantages of Artist Website is there is limited people and audience and the artist won't make as much money from their products. Also the video's on the website can't be shared so it's bad for the artist as they will have less views and for the audience as they can't share it. Also people make fake artist websites so it is hard to find the real artist website.

Downloads
The good thing about downloading videos/music is it is free and easy to download. You don't have to pay for songs or video's and can be downloaded on many websites such as iM1music.net and piratebay. Here you can download many things for free and download them before their release date. Another advantage of downloading is it is easy to download and very quick. Another thing is they could have a download chart showing the latest downloads/top downloads.
This disadvantage of downloading is it is bad for the artist, losing money as not many people are buying their music. Also it is illegal to download music from the internet unless buying from a website. Another disadvantage is some files have viruses and can effect you computer. Also takes up memory to download and if bought on a CD/DVD it does not take up memory.

Purpose of A Music Video

Why are music video's made?
Music videos are made to promote new music releases, raise awareness of a new album/single or to be entertaining to the audience. Some people are more interested in the video rather than the song, so they create music video's to create a larger audience. Music video's are also made to represent an artist and show what type of person they are through the video, for example Lady Gaga is a creative and wild person, she shows this in her video's by her outfits, narrative of the video and props.

To promote a new music video?
Another purpose to make a music video is to promote the song and the artist. This is done to raise awareness about the artists upcoming album/single. When a video is shown on a music channel which has not be seen before, it gets people talking about the video and they share their thoughts about the video on social networking sites or even youtube where they can view the video.

To create a Visual Representation Of an Artist?
Another purpose of a music video is to repesent the artist and also to tell us a bit about the artist. For example Tinie Tempah's songs are very fast and upbeat, he represents himself as a fast, active and energetic person. Another example would be Gorilla's, in most of their videos they use cartoon characters to represent them. This connotes that they are shy and don't like to show their faces or they want to hide their identity. Also if a new audience view an artists music video, this could build their artists fan base if they like the representation of the artist.

To Extend the playability of & Provide Additional Income from a Song?
Another reason and one of the main reasons for creating a music video is to make more money out of the song. They do this by selling the video e.g. on iTunes, or some CD's/DVD's sell the music video with the song. Also music channels play music videos and e.g. MTV show a variety of the mainly the top songs. If a song has a music video (which most do) it is likely to be played in the top charts for a few weeks. The imapct this has on the label and the artist is they make more money from music videos and it increases the salary and business. ACDC is a good example to show play ability. ACDC is a well known old rock band and in the recent Iron Man 2 film, the main song was by ACDC Shoot to thrill. With a new movie, some people may like the song so the song becomes played more and comes back in the charts, which the band and record label make more money.

To create Synergy with other media sectors?
Another purpose of creating a music video is to create synergy with other media sectors. Some artists create and base songs on films and TV. This is to create awareness of the music video and to also advertise the film through the artist and video. The example i have chosen is Aerosmith 'I don't wanna miss a thing', this song is based on the film Armageddon. In the music video they show scenes of the film and the lyrics are about the film. This is good for the artist as their fans and audience might increase from the film side, increase on money and good for the artist as they enter the media industry.

To be Art in their own Right?
Some music videos are made to be creative and to be remembered. It allows the art/technology side to be creative and use technology. The impact this has on the audience is leaving them something to remember and something unforgettable. Most videos are made to enhance and create a narrative of the song to make it a short story. Also some music videos have enigmas which leaves the audience confused, puzzled and want to find out the mystery. This leaves the audience talking about the video and gets shared with friends trying to solve the mystery.

Good & Bad Music Video Techniques

Large Number of Cuts
Good Video-

I think this is a good example to show large number of cuts because from the start there are many cuts until the very end of the video. The reason why it has many cuts is to match the tempo and beat of the song as the song is fast and up beat. The purpose of the large amount of cuts is to keep the audience watching and entertained throughout, as with less cuts, you're focusing on a few cuts which is not as enjoyable to watch as with one with many cuts. This represents the artist and tells us what kind of personality they have as with many cuts, they are active, wild and energetic.

Bad Video-

I think this is a bad video of amount of cuts because there are no cuts in the video except the video pans. The video was a bit boring as there was not one cut and it was the same location, scene and person throughout the video. The impact this has on the audience is it could be boring for them as there is no action but slow motion walking. What this tells us about the artist is they sing slow songs and possibly not as creative.

Special Effects
Good Video

I think this is a good video to show special effects because from the beginning and till the end of the video, there are a variety of special effects such as the opening the Mini, transforms into the artist name. Also little particles waving around the screen throughout the video. This is a perfect example of special effects as the video has different types of special effects. What this says about the artist is they are creative, likes the use of technology and modern. The impact this has on the audience is it is entertaining for them to watch and keeps the audience watching.

Bad Video-

I think this is a bad video of special effects because the snake does not look realistic and is more sharper (more detailed and stands out) than the women. As this film was made recently, it is poor for the technology used today. What this tells us about the people who created this is they don't have the correct equipment for special effects and they possibly don't know how to use it. The impact this has on the audience is they don't think it looks realistic and looks fake, disappointed that the quality is bad.

Cutting to the Beat
Good Video-

I think this is a good video to show cutting to the beat because the beat has a tempo, and the shot changes in a pattern changing on a certain beat, creating a consistent flow of cuts to the beat. The impact this has on the audience is they can view and watch the video better, if the cuts did not match the beat, the video would look out of sync from the video and look confusing. What this tells us about the artist is they are professional and pay attention to detail as cutting to the beat almost tells a story and is clearer.

Varied Camera Language
Good Video-

I think this is a good video to show variable camera language because there are a variety of shots and it changes to a different shot each time. What I think is good about the video is by changing the shot to a different one makes you want to watch it as there's different things going on and it is interesting to watch. What impact this has on the audience is it keeps them interested and entertained by mixing up the shots. What this says about the artist is that they are creative and they have fast paced up beat songs.

Bad Video-

I think this is a bad example for varied camera language because throughout the video, the camera is positioned in front of him most of the time. What effect this has on the audience is it might make them bored from the types of shots. What this says about the artist is that he likes to show his face to show his emotions and also show his body language.

Green Screen
Good Video-

I think this is a good video of green screen because the person in the green screen stands out, they don't mix in or lose colour in the green screen and they are clearly visual. Although I don't think the images look to realistic but as this video was done sometime ago  it is still good. What this says about the artist is they are very creative using green screen as they are filming an impossible location while other things are going on around him. The impact this has on the audience is it is something new and different, unexpect-able and entertaining as it has special effects and based in a fantasy land.

Bad Video

I think this is a bad video of green screen because the characters in the costumes are missing half of their body, because they are wearing green and green will turn invisible on a green screen. What this tells us about the person using green screen is that they are not very professional and do not know how to correctly use a green screen. What affect this has on the audience is, it is not entertaining as the video is not at a good standard and ruins the effect of green screen.

Lip-Syncing-
Good video

I think this is a good video of Lip-Syncing because the artists voice is heard but he is not shown anywhere in the video singing, instead of him there are people miming the lyrics. What I think is unique about this video is the amount of people they have used and also using celebrity's such as Chuck Liddell, Nelly Furtardo and Paul Teutul. What is good about the video is the lip-sync is well timed. What this says about the artist is they could be shy but they make creative and a interesting video. The impact this has on the audience is it is entertaining as it stars celebrity's and they could relate to this as they can mime or sing along to it.

Bad Video

I think this is a bad video to show lip-syncing because the lip sync is out of sync. The music is playing in the background and the boy is clearly miming the words late. The person on the right 50 Cent is miming the word correctly. What this says about the person is they are not very good at miming words or possibly don't know the lyrics well. The effect it has on the audience it makes them think the video is delayed or it's not well put together.

Corporate Video Evaluation

What were you asked to do?
In our task we asked to create a corporate video for a group or groups from Redbridge CVS. We were asked to show what each group does and include footage to show evidence of what they do.

Who/What were you making a video about?
Me and my group were making a video about Basis. Basis works with other groups such as Awaaz, Faith Forum, Redbridge music lounge, DAWN and many more. What me and my group were making our video about is what Basis does and how they help the other groups, what the groups benefit out of this and we also showed how they helped these groups.

What was the purpose of the video?
The purpose of the video was to represent Basis and show what they do. As we were set to film about Basis, we had to film and discuss more than one group as Basis is about helping groups and working with them. The purpose of the video was to get an understanding of how they help groups that are working with them, also to tell us a bit about the groups and what they do.

What did you do in each production stage?
Pre-Production-

In the Pre-production, me and my group planned the date we will go and interview Maddy (Development Coach). The interview is based in Ilford so we had to see if we could go during one of our media lessons. Another task in pre-production was I had to arrange the questions which Maddy had to answer in the interview. The reason why i had to send the questions to Maddy was because so she knew what we would be asking her on the interview day and also to save time, as she wrote the answers to the questions before hand and I held them up for her to read during the interview, so it was easier.

Production-
In the production stage we filmed Maddy (Development Coach) at Redbridge CVS based in Ilford about Basis. This is when we interviewed her, and we did this during lesson time as it was easiest and she had free time to do the interview. In the production stage I went with my group to interview Maddy, and I clarified and said what Maddy had to say in the interview. We were going to try and film other groups we did not have footage for such as 'Peachy' or 'DAWN' but we were more focused on getting the video together and try to film later if we had time.

Post Production-
In the post production stage we started editing the interview we recorded and adding images and other footage together. In this stage we were using a Mac and the program iMovie to put the video and images together. What I did in this stage was i helped in putting some of the video together such as the images and extracting audio, replacing footage with images in between the video so the sound plays over the image. Here i also found images for the video. I found images for the groups which we did not have video/images for example we did not have video/images for Faith forum.

What Problems did you encounter and how did you solve them?
The problems we encountered during this task was the footage and videos we had were to long as in total the video came to around 4 minutes 30 seconds. This was a problem as the video was a bit boring as we had a certain amount of footage of the other groups, and some groups were missing images/videos. We resolved the problem of the video being to long as we cut some scenes and footage out as some stuff was being repeated.

What were your Strengths and weaknesses in each stage?
My strengths in this task were helping out and making decisions when editing the video and putting it together. As I was not very good using the Mac, I contributed my idea's and discussed with my team mates what works well and seeing what goes. My other strength was setting up the interview questions. Here i arranged the questions and I covered the main aspects of what needed to be said in the interview.
My weaknesses in this task were using a Mac and iMovie program. This was a weakness as I was not to familiar with some of the keys and how to replace video/images with other videos, such as deleting scenes from the interview we recorded and replacing this with  video/images.

What is your opinion of the finished Product?
My opinion on the final product is i think it is good overall, it explains what Basis is and is about, tells us how it helps other groups, explains a bit about each group and also tells us what they do to help these groups. The visual side I think needed more images/footage in some of the groups which didn't have images/videos as this would give us an insight on these groups, but other than that I thought the video overall was good.
