Big Ben Face Replaced for 2011

The caption above 'Big Ben Face Replaced for 2011' makes the audience think Big Ben has a new clock face for 2011, making them think Britain is becoming more modern and Britain takes thought in their attractions. The caption stating that it it being 'replaced' makes people and tourists think whats new about the famous clock and see this they can see for themselves. This captions makes me think to things from the perspective of he reader is why they have changed the face of the clock in 2011? and makes me think if it is in the headlines, it must be special to see. The lighting on the image is bright and taken during mid-day, also the sun is reflected around the clock, giving it a glowing effect. This makes the clock stand out and look unique also showing that the clock is reborn and is new. Overall the caption anchors that London has a new clock face for tourists and people to look at for 2011.

Big Ben Strikes One o'clock 26 minutes EARLY!

The Caption above 'Big Ben Strikes One o'clock 26 minutes EARLY!' makes the audience think the world's most famous clock is incorrect and makes people think that people who look after the clock, does not do their job properly. This affects tourists and other people as this ruins their expectations as it is an attraction, also people rely on the clock to give them the right time. This is a negative caption and makes everyone wonder if the clock of Westminster is incorrect, then who's is if Big Ben is famous for having the correct time and is a symbol of the UK. Overall the caption anchors that The world's famous clock can be incorrect and not relied on.

Left Wing or Right Wing

What is Left Wing and Right Wing?
Left wing and right wing are used in policitical positions. Left Wing believes that people should be equal and believe that everybody is entitled into their own rights. People like Ed Miliband who are in favour for people to have equal rights. Also left wing favor in peace, high taxes and social equality. Right wing believes in the opposite of left wing, they favour in lower taxes, favor in capitalism and favour in maintaining class status quo. Right wing believe that people should not be equal, they believe that if you not rich, then get rich.



Left Wing

The Image on the left is the front page of the Guardian newspaper. As you can see the headline says 'Murdoch finally says sorry as Brooks and Hinton quit',this states that it is Left wing as we know Murdoch (the man on the right of the broadsheet) owns many newspapers such as the Sun and the Daily Star which are Right wing, to have Murdoch on the front of a newspaper with the newspaper saying negative stuff about him shows it's Left wing, not putting him in a positive light, also left wing favor in social equality, Murdoch favor's in right wing side and believes in making money. 

 Right Wing

The Image on the left is by Daily mail. This is a Right wing newspaper as the headline states 'So what does it take to deport a criminal' what i think about this headline is from someone's point of view or many, they don't want criminals in this country. This story is about a judge cutting short a drug dealing migrant's sentence so he doesn't get kicked out of the country. From the headline we can tell this is a right wing newspaper as right wing don't favor in social equality and peace, they want the criminal to be kicked out of the country and not give him a second chance. 

What is Phone Hacking?

What is Phone hacking?
Is someone illegally breaking into a mobile phone, accessing their messages, telephone calls, voice mails etc (all access to their phone and information). Phone hackers are illegally accessing peoples devices when unauthroized to. Hacking itself started in the 1980's. Phone hacking or any type of hacking is a serious crime as hackers are illegally intruding in your information. This information could be your personal details such as name, address, mobile number, possibly your card type and number, they invade on your privacy.



Why does the newspaper industry use phone hacking?
The main reason newspaper industry's use phone hacking is to invade in celebrity's, sports stars, famous peoples privacy and find secret information about them to exploit over news headlines. They do this to gain private information of the victims, information victims don't want the media to know. News of the World have been accused of many hacking's in the past and the company was dropped. The incidents they were accused of were hacking into British Solider relatives, hacking into Milly Dowlers voicemails (murdered in March 2002) and the 7/7 London bomb attack victims. They wiped certain voicemails and listened into victims calls. To answer the question overall, newspapers use phone hacking to access victims phones for illegal private information.



What has the impact been on the newspaper industry?
News of the world (known for hacking in previous incidents) have had a big impact on the company as after the situations they were accused of, were dropped. From news of the world causing problems to victims, it has also made an impact to other newspaper industry's, as people and readers do not trust newspapers. The Sun which is a well used newspaper, was financially affected as a 7 percent drop in readers. 


Who are the Main victims of Phone hackers and how has it effected them?
The main victims who were hacked by News of the world are Victims from the 7/7 London bomb attack, Milly Dowler, British soldiers and Sarah Payne.
Milly Dowler- Glenn Mulcaire is a private investigator accused of collecting personal information on Milly Dowlers family, a school girl who was missing in March 2002. Six months later her body was found. News of the world journalists hired private investigators (Glenn Mulcaire) to hack into Milly Dowlers phone. It was said that they deleted messages destroying valuable evidence for police and the family giving false hope that she could still be alive. From News of the world erasing vital evidence, the police and family were lead to thinking she is still alive and continuing the investigation, they were being lied to.
British Soldiers- Glenn Mulcaire once again hacked into some relatives of dead British soldiers killed in action in Afghanistan and Iraq. It was also said that personal details such as phone numbers were found in files of the private investigator Glenn Mulcaire.
7/7 London Bomb attack- Victims, victims family's and also firefighters of the 7/7 attack were hacked by the news of the world.


What is News-corp? How has this Scandal affected them?
News-corp stands for News corporation. News-corp is an American multinational media conglomerate (Large corporation) founded by Rupert Murdoch. The scandal has effected them in their popularity and also being closed down from the scandal, Rupert Murdoch's newspaper industry. 

Who are Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson? How are they involved in the phone
hacking scandal?
Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson are both English journalists. Rebekah is also a former newspaper editor and the youngest editor of a British national newspaper as editor of News of the world and Andy Coulson is also political strategics. They were both involved in the phone hacking scandal as they both payed police for information and Andy Coulson was apart of the phone hacking.


What has the government done to address phone hacking? 
David Cameron himself said he will make up and remit of the public inquiry and sort issues concerning the police. The issues concerning the police was giving vital information to News of the world reporters Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson over money. 

Evaluation on my Edit Workshop

The 180 degree rule is a scene with two people/characters, which only show half of their body, for example it only shows one characters left side of their body and the other characters  right side of their body. If the 180 degree rule is broken, it does not look natural to the viewer. If the camera was on the opposite side, it would break and ruin the continuity. An example of the 180 degree rule is an image on the left.

In our task we had to use the 180 degree rule. We used the 180 degree rule towards the end of our clip when the two characters meet. The 180 degree rule is filming a certain half of two characters and not around them.



I chose to use the rule of thirds to make the footage look professional and to make it look like the two characters are making eye contact. Rule of thirds is an imaginary grid which were the characters eye level has to be same to make it look like characters are talking to each other in direct eye contact. When editing, I came across that certain scenes were higher than the others, for this I could not edit and had to leave it as it was. We did not focus on using this rule but the outcome was still realistic, the characters look like they are talking directly. The rule of thirds is a very important rule, if broken the scene becomes uneven and does not look like the characters are speaking directly to each other.

characters in the next scenes must be the same. 

The Challenges we came across when shooting the footage was trying to get the characters and props in the right position. I found this challenging as a little movement could ruin the video, for example a book on the table closed, but in the next shot is is opened without being touched. This was a very poor and easy mistake, this made the footage look incorrect and unprofessional. We had a similar problem with the book being rotated, we resolved this by re-doing this scene again.

Another scene I would change would be the boy walking down the corridor. I would not change the scene itself but change the angle to a slightly more low angle to make him look more dominant. I did not get the feel that he was the dominant one from reviewing the footage back. As you can see the image on the right, the angle is 'straight on' and a mid shot, if we had more time for this task, me and my partner would re-film this scene to a low angle long-shot so we see all the characters body language showing that they are the dominate one.

Another challenge we faced during this task was getting the characters together and filming in a short period of time. This was a challenge as the characters who were taking part in our short movie were busy at certain times and we did not have enough time to film the shots we hoped for. Also we had to film every single scene on one day, because characters would change props the next day such as their clothes, shoes and possibly hair. This would cause a confusion in scenes and not look correct.
We did not have any problems during the post-production period other than the amount of shots and scenes we had for our clip. This was not a serious problem but thought we could make it longer to add more scenes with suspense. As the story line on our clip was about a lady waiting nervously for her doctor to give her news about something. As the story does not sound long, by adding more scenes of the doctor making his way to her makes it tense, and in between the doctor walking, is the lady getting more and more nervous and scared as she is desperate to hear the news. What I would do next time is add more scenes in my storyboard, as when it comes to the production I can leave specific scenes I do not wish to have. Another problem occurred when editing and putting the scenes together in IMovie.This problem was the amount of scenes we had and some of the scenes itself.



The amount of scenes we had was not enough for the editing and length of the clip. This problem was because of the time we had to do this task. Because of this the short video was not as long as we expected. The other problem was the scenes itself, some scenes were a lot different and when editing and trying to put them together to make it look continuity video, it did not match and not flow. As you can see the image on the left, the girl has her hands down and the image on the right flows after the image on the left, the girl has her right arm raised. From the few shots we had, I had to take out some footage from other scenes we recorded to make to a continuity video.


The overall strengths of our work is the scenes flowed well, the footage was continuous with minor errors. We used a variety of shots such as long shots, mid shots and extreme close-ups making it look more interesting and like a short movie. Also a variety of low angles, straight on and high angles. Using these conventions, we made a good video as this keeps the audience watching with different shots and transitions.
The weaknesses of our work would be some shots such as the girl raising her arm and placing it on her head. We filmed her with her arm down in one scene and as soon as it cuts to the next scene, she has her arm raised touching her head. This was a mistake and was not continuous. To re-solve this problem I cut her raising her arm from another piece of footage and placed it in that scene to make it continuous. It did not look  smooth but we did not have enough time to go back and film this scene again. Another weakness was getting our characters together and planning who will star in our movie. This was lack of communication and we were more focused on planning the scenes and discussing the story line.

What I would improve on if I re-did this task is I would add more footage to the video and add more scenes of the doctor walking and of the lady panicking, i feel their was not enough shots to get an idea of who he is. Also I would expand on more shots to make the video look more creative and more interesting to watch. The last thing I would improve on would be the editing I done in the second clip. It was not far different to the first clip except for a few sound effects and transitions. Next time I would add more sound effects to make the video more exciting and create suspense and more video effects to keep the audience interested, and make the short video better.
