Goodwin's Theory

Andrew John Goodwin was the Director of the Music and Organist at Bangor Cathedrol for 37 years. Goodwins ideas are:

• The relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics
• The relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifiying or contradicting the music
• Genres are comlex
• Record companies will want a lot of close-ups of the main artist or vocalist
• Voyeurism is used in many videos, especially used in female videos

He published his idea's on books called 'Dancing in the Distraction Factory: Music Television and Popular Culture' and 'On Record: Rock, Pop, and the Written Word'. In his books he writes about the meaning of music videos.

Voyeurism

Voyeurism is used in music videos to create pleasure for the audience. Voyeurism is mainly used more in female videos as you see in most female videos, women are exposed. Voyeurism is not represented as sexual but women/men expose themselves to create certain mood to pleasure the audience. Women tend to do this more in their music videos as men were seen more powerful before and it gives them more pleasure to watch.

An example of Voyeurism used in a music video would be Kanye West-Flashing Lights. In this video it focuses on one lady who is fully clothed in the beginning of the video and throughout the video she slow strips to a certain extent. This gives a type of pleasure to the audience (mainly the male side) as she slowly strips in the video and the video footage is played in slow motion to create a certain mood. They show the lady walking towards the camera which engages the audience as you think she is walking towards you.
Voyeurism is showed in many artists videos today such as Shakira, JLO and male artists such as LL Cool J, Usher, Flo Rida and Nelly. Voyeurism is not particually the image of the artist but the action of the artist too. The action of the artist could bring a certain mood to the audience such as the way the artist acts or the way they dance.

Star Persona

Star Persona is when an artist changes their image and possibly personality in there songs and music videos. Many artists today change their image for many purposes such as fashion, changing their image visually, the record label may want the artist to change their image to suit the type of music today as there are new genres of music. An example of an artist who changes their style and image all the time is 'Lady GaGa', she is famous for singing and mostly her style of fashion. She is known as a fashion icon in the music industry. Lady GaGa's style can be defined as abstract and unusal from the type of clothes and materials she wears.

dressed in a unusal outfit. I would define 
this as modern fashion



Here at the MTV Awards she is wearnig 'Meat' as her outfit.
Clearly shows she has her own style as no one has worn meat before.
I would define this image as inhuman and crazy.  

Here at the Grammy awards again she changes her style
wearing a a dress with barbwire rapped around her,
I think this image is quite unique and powerful.
I would define this image as modern and futuristic
