Analysing your Song

Target Audience
I think the target audience for this song is aged from 14-25. The reason why I think it is aged at this target range because the age group can relate to the lyrics and the song as the song is about love, teenagers realte to this more than adults. I believe it is mainly targeted at american teenagers because the two singers are american and as before I mentioned it is targeted at teenagers as in most tenager lifes, they experince love and dating. On another point It can be targeted at a more older audience as the title of the song 'Love of My Life' Indicates its your life partner so this could be targeted at 21-30 year olds.

Analysing LyricsThe Lyrics from the song are straight to the point and it explains their feelings for the person they love. 'When I see her in my dreams, I never want to wake up', this lyric tells us how much they love seeing the person they love, also shows he dreams about her which connotes he can't stop thinking about her all the time. This shows that this the main thing he thinks about and shows how much he loves the person he is singing about.
Another lyric would be 'Your the reason why I breathe' hear he is dennoting that he lives for her and possibly looks forward to seeing her. Also this connotes that he never liked life before, he may have been stressed about something as he says your the only reason why I breathe meaning he has something to live for and not to die.
Another lyric to describe his feeling for the person he loves is 'The meaning of when they say its meant to be You and me, Can no other come between' Hear he is trying to say the meaning 'it's meant to be tells us that him and his lover were meant to be together like it is destiny. The other part of the lyric 'can no other come between' hear he dennotes that no other person can come between them and split them up, that they have strong feelings for each other and nothing can break them apart.

Analysing Music
The music from the song is mainly played with a piano from start to finish. This makes the song sound more emotional and suits the narrative of the song which is sad romantic. The music also suits the tone of the two singers as they are singing rather than rapping. In some parts of the some, mainly the chorus the song is more upbeat, this could be to show that the chorus is main part by changing the music slightly.

Analysinig Tempo
The tempo of the song as I mentioned before is slow and fast. The piano has a slower tempo than the beat of the song which mixes the tempo making it a slow upbeat rhythem. What I like about the tempo is the unsigned artists voices and vocals fit well with the song and makes it more interesting to listen to. I think in some parts of the song such as the intro, the tempo of the song starts of quite fast and then breaks down into the slow upbeat tempo, here i think it should start with the piano to give the audience the impression of the song

How Would you use this in a Music Video
I would use this song in a video showing the two people apart and then towards the chorus it shows the two people together. The video would be based around the city and were they live to show they spend time with each other in the city and close by. The male character would be miming the lyrics to the song showing it's about him and it will cut inbetween him mimming and him with the person he loves doing something such as walking on the beach. The chorus would be of the singer/singers together singing to the camera and again cutting to the narrative part of the song, but here they would be speaking directly to the audience unlike the intro were they are just singing to themselves. Towards the end it will show the two people in love together on their own some romantic like on the beach watching the sun set, and it would fade out as the sun goes down between them. Overall the narrative of the video would be the artist showing his feelings for the girl and shows past times of them two together to show the audience what kind of couple they are.

Goodwin's Theory

Andrew John Goodwin was the Director of the Music and Organist at Bangor Cathedrol for 37 years. Goodwins ideas are:
  • The relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics
  • The relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifiying or contradicting the music
  • Genres are comlex
  • Record companies will want a lot of close-ups of the main artist or vocalist
  • Voyeurism is used in many videos, especially used in female videos

He published his idea's on books called 'Dancing in the Distraction Factory: Music Television and Popular Culture' and 'On Record: Rock, Pop, and the Written Word'. In his books he writes about the meaning of music videos.

Voyeurism
Voyeurism is used in music videos to create pleasure for the audience. Voyeurism is mainly used more in female videos as you see in most female videos, women are exposed. Voyeurism is not represented as sexual but women/men expose themselves to create certain mood to pleasure the audience. Women tend to do this more in their music videos as men were seen more powerful before and it gives them more pleasure to watch.

Here she is facing the audience taking off her coat

Here she is walking towards her car,
here she is hardly wearing anything

An example of Voyeurism used in a music video would be Kanye West-Flashing Lights. In this video it focuses on one lady who is fully clothed in the beginning of the video and throughout the video she slow strips to a certain extent. This gives a type of pleasure to the audience (mainly the male side) as she slowly strips in the video and the video footage is played in slow motion to create a certain mood. They show the lady walking towards the camera which engages the audience as you think she is walking towards you.
Voyeurism is showed in many artists videos today such as Shakira, JLO and male artists such as LL Cool J, Usher, Flo Rida and Nelly. Voyeurism is not particually the image of the artist but the action of the artist too. The action of the artist could bring a certain mood to the audience such as the way the artist acts or the way they dance.

Star Persona
Star Persona is when an artist changes their image and possibly personality in there songs and music videos. Many artists today change their image for many purposes such as fashion, changing their image visually, the record label may want the artist to change their image to suit the type of music today as there are new genres of music. An example of an artist who changes their style and image all the time is 'Lady GaGa', she is famous for singing and mostly her style of fashion. She is known as a fashion icon in the music industry. Lady GaGa's style can be defined as abstract and unusal from the type of clothes and materials she wears.

Here we Lady Gaga performing to her first song
'Just Dance', we see her dressed appropriately,
dressed in a unusal outfit. I would define
this as modern fashion

Here at the MTV Awards she is wearnig 'Meat' as her outfit.
Clearly shows she has her own style as no one has worn meat before.
I would define this image as inhuman and crazy.
Here at the Grammy awards again she changes her style
wearing a a dress with barbwire rapped around her,
I think this image is quite unique and powerful.
I would define this image as modern and futuristic
